Agra – There are many old 19th century havelis in and around Agra’s very old street Sethgali. These havelis have special wrought iron railings. At that time these railings made of iron casting were imported from Great Britain. These beautiful railings were a symbol of the wealth that resided behind these secure walls. Most of these multistoried havelis had akhadas or traditional gymnasiums. The public police system at that time was not very efficient. That is why the rich Seths of the city used to hire strong wrestlers for their personal security. These wrestlers used to do their training regularly in the in-house gym. Some of these havelis are still occupied by tenants and some have been converted into commercial places. The dilapidated window panes of these havelis still tell stories of the bygone era.
