Maheshwar is a very beautiful small town in Khargone district located in Madhya Pradesh. Maheshwar is visited by an endless number of tourists throughout the year. It is widely known as an ideal tourist destination. A large number of pilgrims come here in search of self-realization and to attain inner peace. In the late 18th century, the Maharani of Indore built her palace in the massive Maheshwar fort on the banks of the holy Narmada River.
After two centuries of Mughal hegemony, wanting to give back its full place to Hinduism, the Maharani spent a lot on the construction of religious buildings, most of them dedicated to the god Shiva.
A part of the palace has become a hotel. But the main courtyard, where the temple is located, is public as well as the sculptures around it, which are close to the river and the ghats. Many very expressive sculptures adorn the columns of the arches that surround the large courtyard.
