ndian engineers and technology professionals have become a familiar presence in the global technology industry. They work for major software companies, multinational corporations, technology consultancies, startups and research organisations across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Australia and Asia.
But what explains this international presence?
It would be too simple to say that Indian engineers are simply “better” than engineers from other countries. The reality is more interesting. India’s position in the global technology market has developed over several decades through a combination of scale, engineering education, English-language skills, an established IT industry, international experience and a large professional diaspora.
These factors have reinforced one another and created one of the world’s largest technology talent ecosystems.
India has an unusually large technology workforce
Scale is one of India’s biggest advantages.
India has a huge higher-education system and thousands of institutions offering engineering and technology programmes. Government data shows the country’s technical education system includes thousands of approved institutions across engineering and technology programmes.
Not every graduate becomes a highly skilled software engineer, of course. Educational quality varies considerably, and a degree alone does not guarantee strong technical ability.
However, when a country produces technology graduates at very large scale, even a relatively small proportion of highly capable professionals can create a substantial international talent pool.
That scale matters to global employers. A company looking for specialists in a particular technology may have difficulty finding enough suitable candidates in a small labour market. A much larger technology ecosystem provides more opportunities to find people with specific combinations of experience and skills.
English makes international collaboration easier
Language is another important part of the story.
English is widely used in Indian higher education, business and the technology sector. This has made it easier for Indian professionals to work with international customers and distributed teams.
Software engineering is highly collaborative. Developers may work with product managers in the United States, designers in Europe, customers in Asia and colleagues in India, all on the same project.
Technical ability is therefore only one part of the job. Communication matters too.
India’s familiarity with professional English gave its technology industry an important advantage as international software development expanded.
India’s IT industry created decades of international experience
India’s global technology presence was built over many years.
Large Indian technology companies developed extensive relationships with international businesses, particularly in markets such as North America and Europe.
Companies including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Wipro helped establish India as an important destination for software services, consulting, technology support and business-process operations.
This created something that cannot be built overnight: experience at scale.
Indian technology professionals gained experience working with international customers, enterprise software, large databases, cloud infrastructure and complex business systems.
The industry also created managers, architects, project leaders and entrepreneurs who had already worked in international environments.
This experience became a competitive advantage for the next generation.
The technology ecosystem became self-reinforcing
One of the less obvious reasons for India’s success is the network effect.
When a country has a large technology industry, it produces more than just programmers. It creates experienced technical managers, software architects, technology recruiters, entrepreneurs, engineering trainers, universities, startup networks, professional communities and international business connections.
A young engineer entering this ecosystem therefore has access to an established professional environment.
Someone may graduate from university, join an IT company, work on an international project, move to another technology company and eventually work abroad or start a business.
Each generation adds more experience to the ecosystem.
The Indian technology diaspora matters
The Indian technology workforce is not limited to India.
Indian professionals have established substantial communities in technology centres around the world. This includes Silicon Valley and other US technology hubs, as well as major centres in Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Singapore and the Gulf region.
These communities can create powerful professional connections.
An engineer in India may already know someone working in London or California. A company may already employ Indian engineers who can recommend candidates from their professional network.
This does not mean that Indian candidates receive jobs simply because they are Indian. Rather, established professional networks can reduce the distance between employers and potential employees.
Cost helped India become a global IT destination
Cost was also an important factor in the early expansion of India’s IT industry.
For many years, companies could obtain software development and technology services in India at significantly lower costs than hiring equivalent teams in Western markets.
This encouraged international companies to outsource certain activities to India.
But cost alone cannot explain India’s long-term success.
If low wages were the only requirement, many countries could have replaced India.
India’s stronger advantage came from the combination of competitive costs, technical education, English communication, workforce scale and experience with international clients.
Once companies had established operations and relationships in India, the ecosystem became increasingly difficult to replicate elsewhere.
India’s technology industry is moving beyond traditional outsourcing
There is another important change taking place.
India’s technology story is no longer limited to traditional IT outsourcing.
The country’s technology sector is increasingly involved in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, engineering research and development, data platforms, software products and digital infrastructure.
According to NASSCOM’s 2026 technology-sector review, India’s direct technology-sector employment is projected to reach approximately 6 million people in FY2026, while the sector is shifting from scale-driven growth toward greater emphasis on value, innovation and advanced technology.
That shift is important.
The future of India’s technology workforce will depend less on simply providing large numbers of programmers and more on providing people capable of solving complicated technical and business problems.
Artificial intelligence is changing the skills companies want
The rise of artificial intelligence is also changing what employers expect from engineers.
Basic programming knowledge is no longer enough for many advanced technology positions.
Companies increasingly need professionals who understand artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud architecture, data engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, distributed systems, automation, AI infrastructure and software architecture.
NASSCOM’s recent industry research also points to increasing demand for advanced data analytics, AI/ML and DevOps skills, with AI/ML, cybersecurity and cloud among areas attracting skill premiums.
This means India’s future advantage will depend heavily on whether its workforce can continuously develop new skills.
Are Indian engineers better than engineers from other countries?
Not necessarily.
This is an important distinction.
There are exceptionally talented engineers in virtually every major technology market. The United States, China, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, Poland, Singapore and many other countries have strong technology communities.
Indian engineers are not successful internationally because of nationality alone.
Recruiters ultimately care about technical ability, relevant experience, problem-solving skills, communication, teamwork, understanding of modern technologies, adaptability and professional experience.
India’s advantage is that it combines these skills with an exceptionally large technology workforce and a mature international IT ecosystem.
Why companies continue to look toward India
For an international company, India offers something unusual: depth.
A company can potentially find junior developers, experienced engineers, project managers, architects, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists and technology executives within the same broad ecosystem.
India also has a large number of professionals who already understand how international companies operate.
This reduces some of the challenges associated with building global technology teams.
At the same time, international companies increasingly establish their own engineering and research centres in India rather than relying exclusively on traditional outsourcing companies.
That is an important sign of how India’s role is changing.
The biggest challenge: quantity is not the same as quality
India’s enormous technology workforce is an advantage, but it also creates challenges.
A large number of engineering graduates does not automatically mean that all graduates possess the skills employers need.
There can be significant differences between institutions, courses and individual students.
The industry therefore has to invest continuously in training and reskilling.
This is particularly important as artificial intelligence changes the technology job market.
The engineer who learned one programming language ten years ago cannot assume that the same skills will remain sufficient throughout an entire career.
Continuous learning is becoming increasingly important for technology professionals everywhere, including India.
What could happen next?
India’s technology industry is entering a different phase.
The first phase was largely about building a huge technology-services workforce.
The next phase is increasingly about higher-value engineering, AI, research, products and innovation.
NASSCOM’s 2026 assessment describes this transition as a move from scale-led growth toward value and innovation, with AI becoming increasingly embedded across technology operations.
If India’s universities, companies and professionals can keep pace with rapidly changing technology, the country could remain one of the world’s most important sources of technology talent.
But the competitive landscape is changing too.
Engineers from other countries are becoming increasingly connected to the global technology economy, remote work has expanded access to international talent, and AI is changing the skills companies need.
India’s position is therefore not guaranteed.
It has to be continuously earned.
