The Indian Army is increasing its focus on advanced technologies as it prepares for a more connected and digitally driven future. Areas such as artificial intelligence, next-generation communications, quantum technology and advanced computing are becoming part of India’s wider defence technology efforts.

The interest in 6G is particularly significant. India is already working on developing its own next-generation communication ecosystem, with a national goal of becoming a major contributor to 6G technology by 2030. For defence, future communication networks could help connect people, devices and information more efficiently.

Artificial intelligence is another important area. AI systems can process large amounts of information, identify patterns and assist with complex tasks. For the military, such capabilities could eventually support faster analysis and improve the way information is handled across different systems.

India is also investing heavily in quantum technology. The National Quantum Mission is supporting research in quantum computing, secure communications, sensing and advanced quantum materials. India is also encouraging cooperation between defence organisations, universities, research institutions, startups and technology companies. This wider technology ecosystem could help turn research and new ideas into practical capabilities over time.

However, many of these technologies are still at the research, testing or development stage. It will take time before every emerging technology can be reliably used in real-world military environments.

The direction of India’s defence modernisation is nevertheless becoming clear. Future military capability will increasingly depend on how effectively technology, data and human expertise can work together.
