Ottawa – Canada plans to welcome about 1.2 million immigrants for the next 3 years from 2021 to 2023 announced Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marco Mendicino.
The plan aims to continue welcoming immigrants at a rate of about 1% of the population of Canada with 401,000 permanent residents in 2021, 411,000 in 2022 and 421,000 in 2023.
Though applications were accepted during the COVID-19 pandemic by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the global travel restrictions and capacity constraints led to a shortfall in admissions over the last several months. The new plan has increased the previously set targets of 351,000 in 2021 and 361,000 in 2022.
