Agra’s Modern Book Depot was established in 1946, a year before Indian independence. It was founded by late Kanwar Bhan and late Jeevan Ram, two brothers from undivided Punjab before partition. This historic shop is considered a symbol of the reading culture of the city.
This book store is a special attraction for foreign customers, especially those who come to see the Taj Mahal in Agra. One can buy selected books of Indian authors and publishers and foreign authors as well. The name of this shop can be seen in important tourist guides like India Norde (Trotamundos), Lonely Planet – Japanese, French Le Guide du Rutard, Inde du Nord etc. Other members of the family also run shops under the same name in other cities like Kolkata, Bubhaneshwar and Siliguri.
