Agra . The history of Jalebi is associated with Agra. It is said that around 150 erstwhile a young boy named Nem Chand Jain left his native village near Agra and went to Delhi to try his luck in a big city with 50 paise received in dowry from the family of his seven year old wife. . This boy from Agra, Nem Chand, worked as a hawker in Delhi for many years selling rabdi. During this he met a Muslim businessman named Shamsuddin Ifran who had a shop in Dariba Kalan at the corner of Chandni Chowk. Shamsuddin, seeing this boy industrious, gave him an opportunity to set up a stall on the sidewalk in front of his shop. Here Nem Chand started making Jalebi. His sweet became increasingly popular. Over time, Nem Chand’s jalebi shop made him richer than the shop owner. He succeeded in building a large mansion for his family in the khajanchi street.
