Benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended modestly higher on Friday after giving up most of their strong intra-day gains in a volatile session.
The Sensex rose 325.72 points (0.44%) to close at 74,532.96, after surging over 1,000 points earlier in the day. The Nifty gained 112.35 points (0.49%) to settle at 23,114.50, after touching higher levels during intra-day trade.
Buying in PSU banks, IT, and metal stocks supported the market. Key gainers included Infosys, Reliance Industries and Tata Steel, while HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank lagged.
Investor sentiment remained cautious amid rising fuel prices and global uncertainties. Brent crude climbed to $110.7 per barrel, raising inflation concerns.
Markets also saw pressure as Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth ₹7,558.19 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) offered partial support with buying.
The gains come a day after a sharp market fall, when both indices had dropped over 3% on Thursday.
