Strengthening indigenous AI capabilities is central to India’s broader vision of technological sovereignty, digital self-reliance, and inclusive growth. In a world where AI is rapidly shaping governance models, economic competitiveness, and citizen services, building systems grounded in local languages, datasets, and regulatory frameworks ensures innovation remains aligned with national priorities and societal needs.
Developing domestic AI ecosystems not only protects strategic autonomy but also supports economic resilience and equitable access to emerging technologies.
Recognizing this importance, Sarvam AI is among the 12 organizations selected under the Innovation Centre pillar of the IndiaAI Mission to develop indigenous foundational AI models. The initiative provides financial and compute support worth ₹246.72 crore to accelerate development.
The company is currently building large language models (LLMs) and advanced speech technologies tailored to Indian languages and public service needs. These systems include voice-based interfaces, intelligent document processing, and citizen-centric digital tools designed to improve accessibility and usability in government services.
By building AI models aligned with India’s national goals, Sarvam AI is helping reduce dependence on foreign AI systems while strengthening the country’s open-source ecosystem. This effort also encourages innovation among startups, academic institutions, research organizations, and industry players.
Key AI Models Developed by Sarvam AI
Sarvam AI has developed several foundational AI tools designed for India’s multilingual environment:
Bulbul (Text-to-Speech): Supports 11 Indian languages with 39 distinct speaker voices.
Saaras (Speech-to-Text): Capable of recognizing all 22 scheduled Indian languages, including 8kHz telephony audio and code-mixed speech.
Vision (Document Understanding): Built for document processing in over 22 Indian languages, supporting mixed scripts and handwritten text.
Together, these technologies demonstrate how India-focused AI systems can evolve into scalable digital infrastructure capable of serving a population of over a billion people. By enhancing linguistic accessibility and enabling efficient public service delivery, Sarvam AI’s work supports India’s ambition to build a globally competitive AI ecosystem.
Building a Full-Stack Sovereign AI Ecosystem
Sarvam AI has also developed a comprehensive full-stack sovereign AI ecosystem aimed at supporting enterprises, governments, developers, and creators across India. Built entirely within the country, the ecosystem spans compute infrastructure, foundational AI models, developer platforms, and real-world applications.
This integrated approach highlights India’s growing commitment to technological self-reliance in artificial intelligence while laying the groundwork for next-generation digital innovation.
