New Delhi, October 13, 2026: The Government of India has introduced significant changes to the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) system, bringing relief to millions of overseas Indians through digital OCI cards, simplified passport updates and reduced paperwork.

The reforms, introduced in June 2026 with further clarifications issued in September, aim to make OCI services faster and more convenient.

Mandatory OCI Card Reissuance Removed

Under the revised rules, OCI cardholders who obtain a new foreign passport after turning 20 are no longer required to obtain a replacement physical OCI booklet solely because of passport renewal.

Instead, eligible cardholders must update their passport details online through the official OCI portal. Applicable biometric verification requirements remain in place.

Digital e-OCI Card Introduced

The government has also introduced the electronic OCI (e-OCI) card, allowing cardholders to access their OCI documentation digitally.

Existing physical OCI cards remain valid, and cardholders are not required to replace them simply because the digital system has been introduced.

Important 90-Day Deadline

OCI holders required to update their passport information should complete the process within 90 days of receiving their new passport.

Updates submitted within the prescribed period are free, while delayed submissions may attract an additional fee of US$25 or its local currency equivalent, along with applicable charges.

The revised system also reduces the need for physical visits to Indian embassies and consulates for routine OCI miscellaneous services, although authorities may request additional verification where necessary.

What OCI Holders Should Do: Overseas Indians are advised to check their OCI records, update passport information within the prescribed deadline and review the latest requirements before travelling to India.
