India mourns the voice of a generation A highly-esteemed playback singer S Janaki is one of India’s celebrated musical artists who has died at age 88 in Mysuru, marking the end of a stellar career that impacted countless lives throughout the country. Janaki is well-regarded as the “Nightingale of South India” and has enjoyed a long and accomplished music career.

In her more than six decades of work, she has been featured on close to 40,000 songs in nearly 20 native languages and has gained widespread fame due to her remarkable voice.
There is a significant outcry over Janaki’s death and various Indian politicians, music artists, movie stars and citizens have been offering their sincere regards. President Droupadi Murmu referred to her as a “legendary artist whose evergreen songs added splendor to India’s cultural heritage”, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that her death was a “great loss for India’s culture and music.” Numerous movie stars, including Kamal Haasan, Chiranjeevi and Rajinikanth, have issued condolences and offered tributes to Janaki’s remarkable career in Indian movies and music. The music icon’s cremation will be held in Mysuru, where admirers will be able to offer a final tribute to Janaki’s legacy, whose music will live on for years to come.
