India Introduces Biometric UPI Payments from October 8 to Boost Secure Digital Transactions

India is set to launch biometric authentication for UPI payments starting October 8, 2025. This new feature will allow users to make payments using their fingerprint or facial recognition, linked with Aadhaar, instead of entering a PIN.

The aim of this upgrade is to make digital transactions more secure and user-friendly, especially for people who are not comfortable using passwords or PINs. Elderly users, rural populations, and first-time smartphone users are expected to benefit the most from this change.

The biometric UPI feature will be introduced in phases, starting with select banks and mobile apps that support Aadhaar-based authentication. A broader rollout is planned in the coming months as the system stabilizes and more devices become compatible.

With over 10 billion UPI transactions taking place each month, this move is expected to further boost digital payments in the country. It also aligns with India’s push toward a cashless, inclusive digital economy.
