India is currently facing pressure on its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply due to disruptions in global energy routes and rising demand across the country. The government has asked households and businesses to avoid panic booking of LPG cylinders and consider switching to piped natural gas wherever possible.
Officials from the oil ministry said the supply situation tightened after global shipping routes in the Gulf region were affected by geopolitical tensions. Since India imports a significant portion of its LPG from Gulf countries, any disruption in that region quickly impacts domestic supply chains.
To stabilize the situation, the government has directed energy companies and refiners to increase domestic production and ensure fair distribution of cylinders. Authorities are also monitoring markets closely to prevent black marketing and hoarding of LPG cylinders, which can worsen shortages for households.
India currently has more than 330 million LPG users across the country, making it one of the largest LPG markets in the world. At the same time, over 150 million homes already have access to piped natural gas networks in several cities, providing an alternative fuel option for cooking and heating.
Officials believe that shifting some consumers to piped gas could help reduce pressure on LPG distribution in the short term. According to estimates, nearly six million households could move to piped natural gas infrastructure where it is already available.
The government has also prioritized LPG supply for essential services such as hospitals, schools, and households, while advising commercial establishments to explore other energy options if possible. Ports have been instructed to give priority docking to LPG carriers to speed up imports and improve availability in the domestic market.
Energy experts warn that global fuel prices and supply disruptions could continue to influence India’s energy security in the coming months. If international tensions persist, fuel imports could remain volatile, making efficient energy management increasingly important for the country.
Despite the temporary pressure on supplies, officials say the government is taking multiple steps to ensure that essential cooking fuel remains available to millions of Indian households.
