Ministers Sidhu and Goyal outline plans to deepen economic cooperation and launch new trade initiatives

Canada and India have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade and investment relations following high-level discussions between Minister Sidhu and Minister Goyal.

Both sides agreed to work towards delivering concrete outcomes aimed at supporting economic growth and expanding commercial opportunities for businesses in both countries.

Focus on expanding cooperation across key sectors

Building on recent ministerial engagement, the Indian delegation — described as the largest India has ever sent to any country — was welcomed during discussions that highlighted opportunities for deeper cooperation.

Both countries identified several priority sectors for collaboration, including clean energy, critical minerals, agri-food, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, and skills development.

Officials from both sides said these sectors offer strong potential for long-term economic engagement and innovation-led growth.

Progress on Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

The ministers reiterated their shared commitment to advancing negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Both sides expressed their intention to conclude discussions by the end of the year.

According to officials, the proposed agreement is expected to improve market access, strengthen supply chain resilience, and support increased two-way trade and investment.

Launch of Canada–India Trade and Investment Forum

During the meeting, the Canada–India Trade and Investment Forum was officially launched as a platform to bring together business leaders from both countries.

The forum is expected to facilitate new partnerships, encourage investment opportunities, and strengthen commercial engagement between Canadian and Indian companies.

Strengthening connectivity and business mobility

The two sides also discussed the importance of improving connectivity between Canada and India, including greater people-to-people exchanges, business mobility, and direct commercial linkages.

Officials said these factors are essential for supporting deeper economic integration and long-term cooperation.

Upcoming trade mission to India

Minister Sidhu confirmed that Canada will lead a “Team Canada” trade mission to India later this year.

The mission is expected to reflect growing interest among Canadian businesses in expanding their presence in India and strengthening bilateral commercial ties.

Ongoing dialogue and future cooperation

Both countries agreed to continue encouraging long-term investment in priority sectors and to enhance collaboration between businesses, innovators, and institutional partners.

Officials confirmed that regular dialogue will continue in the coming months to ensure progress on agreed initiatives and deliver tangible outcomes.
