Mysuru, Karnataka — Sept 18, 2025,In a significant boost to eco-tourism in Karnataka, the state government has officially declared Shuka Vana, a renowned bird sanctuary located within the Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Ashram in Mysuru, as a designated tourist destination under the Karnataka Tourism Policy 2024–29**.

This recognition comes as part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable and culturally rich tourist locations across the state.

A Guinness Record-Holding Aviary

Shuka Vana, which holds a Guinness World Record** for housing the most bird species in a single aviary, is home to over 2,000 birds from more than 450 species. It is the brainchild of Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji**, who established the sanctuary not only as a conservation effort but also as a center for *avian healing, rehabilitation*, and *spiritual education*.

Sanctuary and Avian Hospital

More than just a tourist attraction, Shuka Vana functions as a fully-equipped bird hospital and rehabilitation center. The facility rescues and treats injured, abandoned, and trafficked birds, many of which are endangered or exotic species.

Veterinary experts at the center provide long-term care, with specialized facilities for surgeries, physical therapy, and avian behavioral rehabilitation.

Unique Feature: Zodiac Birds

One of the most unique aspects of Shuka Vana is its integration of astrology and avian symbolism. According to Indian tradition, each zodiac sign (rashi) corresponds to a specific bird. Visitors can explore this spiritual connection through the sanctuary’s Zodiac Bird Garden, where each enclosure represents one of the 12 astrological signs.

This blend of spirituality and biodiversity has made Shuka Vana especially popular among spiritual tourists and younger generations seeking culturally immersive experiences.

Growing Footfall and Future Plans

With the new official status, the Karnataka Tourism Department expects a significant increase in footfall to the sanctuary, which has remained somewhat under the radar despite its global acclaim.

Shuka Vana reflects Karnataka’s rich ecological and cultural diversity. This recognition will enable better infrastructure and increased awareness about conservation,” said an official from the Karnataka Department of Tourism.

Improvements in road access, signage, guided tour options, and multilingual support are expected in the coming months.
