Pandit Shivkumar Sharma popularised the Santoor at global level

“Our cultural world is poorer with the demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. He popularised the Santoor at a global level. His music will continue to enthral the coming generations. Panditji was born on 13th January, 1938 in Jammu (British India) in the house of the great vocalist and musician of Benaras Gharana – Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma
Music lovers cannot talk about Santoor without mentioning the maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, the man who introduced this instrument and made it a prominent part of the Hindustani classical music. It is true that one man can bring massive amount of change in anything if he really wants to. Santoor which was also known as ‘Shata Tantri Veena’ in the ancient times was a part of the folk music in the beautiful valleys of Jammu & Kashmir fought its way up in the classical music only through the efforts of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma.
