More than five thousand delegates from nearly two hundred countries are attending. It is estimated that more than a hundred species of plants and animals become extinct every day, at untold environmental and economic cost. German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel said in his opening speech that the world faces a Herculean task to safeguard animal and plant life from climate change and pollution. The conference will also review the goal set at the UN Earth Summit in 1992 of slowing the loss of biological diversity by 2010, which critics say can no longer be reached.
