A fresh initiative by the ministry of overseas Indians affairs might result in some relief for non-resident Indians in the matter of getting their children admitted to professional and higher education courses in India. The ministry asked the states at a meeting last week to create 15 per cent supernumerary seats in educational institutions to incorporate children of non-resident Indians (NRIs) and people of Indian origin (PIOs). With a large number of their children evincing interest to study in India, overseas Indians have been lobbying hard for an exclusive university.
