British Govt urged to relax visa rules PDF Print E-mail

The UK government should relax visa regulations for highly skilled workers from India and other countries outside Europe, who face joblessness or cuts in salaries because of the credit crunch, a lobby group said Friday.

The Highly Skilled Migrants Programme (HSMP) Forum said in a statement that visa extension rules that require evidence of high salaries or incomes from doctors, engineers and other professionals were unrealistic in the current economic climate.

With companies going into liquidation and reports of a difficult economic climate ahead, "migrants from outside the European region are the first to face salary cuts and redundancies", the forum said.

Overseas Indian Citizenship cards in high demand PDF Print E-mail

ImageThe Overseas Indian Citizenship (OCI) card scheme, launched by the government , has been a great success and the demand for OCI cards has been very high.

 Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said that close to 90,000 OCI cards have been issued ever since the scheme was announced at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas  in Hyderabad.

Persons of Indian origin (PIO) in countries that allow dual citizenship can apply for the card. An OCI cardholder enjoys all benefits that an Indian citizen enjoys except for voting rights and the right to hold constitutional posts like the president, vice-president or a judge of the Supreme Court or high courts.
